01Start with layout, not board count
A board count without layout details can miss trims, fascia, stairs, direction changes and wastage. Decide whether boards run toward the view, along the longest edge or across a doorway before final quantities are requested.
- Mark board direction on a sketch or plan.
- Separate stairs, landings and perimeter zones.
- Allow for cuts, breaker boards and perimeter finishing.
02Subframe and drainage checks
Composite boards need a suitable supporting frame and clear drainage. The exact framing method depends on the project, but the quote request should always state whether the frame is timber, steel or an existing structure.
- Confirm joist direction and spacing with installer guidance.
- Keep water from being trapped at thresholds or edges.
- Do not close off ventilation paths with trims or fascia.
03Fixing and trim planning
Hidden clip systems create a clean surface, but they still need starter clips, locking clips and perimeter trim decisions. Planning accessories late is one of the easiest ways to slow a project down.
- Choose clip type before ordering.
- Plan fascia and edge trim for exposed sides.
- Include screws and tools in the material schedule.
